[Music] Moon River by Hepburn

I'm back 我回来了 301

Good Grades the Easy Way?

Today's students learn more in school than just reading, writing and arithmetic. they also learn how to cheat. More and more students are using dishonest means to get good grades and get into top universities. Increasingly, tomorrow's leaders are today's cheaters. Academic cheating has risen dramatically over the last decades. Duke University conducted a survey of 50,000 university and 18,000 students in America. More than 70 persent of the students admitted to cheating. Just 10 years earlier, only 56 persent said that they had cheated.

Breakfast at Tiffany's dress

fetches £410,000

Accessorised with pearls, a cigarette holder and its wearer’s doe-eyed charm, Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress in Breakfast At Tiffany’s is one of cinema’s most iconic garments.

Today it became the most expensive, selling at auction for £410,000 as the star attraction in a record-breaking sale of film and entertainment memorabilia at Christie’s in Kensington, West London.

At almost six times the estimated price of £70,000 the dress, worn in the 1961 film, accounted for almost half of the £1,038,112 raised in total.

Among the 276 other lots was James Bond’s first gun, the Walther PPK used by Sean Connery in Dr No, which sold for £54,000 and the hideous reindeer jumper worn by Colin Firth’s Mark Darcy for a particularly embarrassing Christmas party scene in Bridget Jones’ Diary. It fetched £1,080.

Sarah Hodgson, head of the popular entertainment and film department at Christie’s, London, said that the auction had set a record for a film memorabilia sale in this country.

The dress, a size six to eight, became the most expensive made for a film and was bought by an anonymous telephone bidder.

The man chosen by President Bush to be his new Defense Secretary Robert Gates has told the Senate Committee that the United States is not winning in Iraq. The Senate Armed Forces Committee has unanimously approved Mr. Gates in his new post. And the full Senate is expected to endorse this later in the week. From Washington, our correspondent Justin Web.

Only weeks ago, President Bush said America was winning the war in Iraq. Asked whether he believed the US was winning Mr. Gates responded without hesitation, "No sir". America's course over the next two years would he said, determine whether there could be a slow improvement or a regional conflagration. There were no rhetorical flourishes in this performance but Mr. Gates was hugely assertive. He said he didn't want the job. He was doing it because he loved his country. Once he was confirmed, all options would be on the table. Mr. Gates also distanced himself from those who might be considering military action against Iran. That will be an absolute last resort, he said. After this confident performance, Mr. Gates is certain to be confirmed in office probably this week.

American commanders in Iraq say they expect the entire country to be under Iraqi provincial control within less than a year. The senior US military spokesman Major General William Caldwell said that the command of all Iraqi army divisions should have passed from American to Iraqi control even sooner by late spring or early summer next year.

A British company says it has convincing evidence that stem cells taken from human fetuses could help stroke patients recover from brain damage. The company / says it is preparing to apply to the United States authorities for permission to extract stem cells from the brain area of a 12 week body fetus and inject them into stroke victims. / wants to produce unlimited quantities of stem cells from just one fetal tissue sample, making the process commercially viable and it believes ethically more acceptable. Joe Conner from the Stroke Association in the United Kingdom says it is an exciting prospect for sufferers.

A Third of the people have a stroke who are left with disability. And they may recover very slowly rehabilitation may help, but they will be left with those permanent disability so for them the potential of a treatment which could really restore their mobility ,restore their ability to speak is quite amazing.

In Thailand the last unidentified victims of the tsunami two years ago will be buried in a few hours' time in a cemetery in one of the worst affected areas, the Andaman coast. 125 corpses which could not be identified through DNA testing or dental records have been implanted with microchips被植入了晶片 so they could be disinterred later if needed. A BBC correspondent in the region says most are thought to be illegal workers from Burma whose families would have been unable to come to Thailand to find them.

The health authorities in New York City have voted to ban a controversial food ingredient known as Transfats可以连写吧 转基因脂类 from the city's restaurants and food shops. It'll be the first American city to ban the product which can clog arteries and cause serious health problems. Restaurants will have until next July in next year to stop using the ingredient as a cooking oil. And by July 2008, they must be phased out altogether. These New Yorkers were asked for their reactions.

I think the fact that Transfats have been banned in New York is really the first step for New York to become a more healthy city, I really do.
Well I think it's a good thing because it's healthier, I think you can get the same flavor in the same amount of cooking by not using Transfat oils. ok. It might even taste better.
In 1970, this gotta kill you, I smoke I drink. And these things will kill you too, so two difference.

VOA Dictation

In the 1966 surfing cult movie The Endless Summer, two American surfers came to the Ngor village area of Senegal. The young characters found surfable waves and culture curious about foreigners in the sport of surfing. Forty years later, surf tourism has swelled in Dakar, and in the past decade more locals are leaning the difficult sport.

Ibrahim Bakhoum lives in Ngor village. He makes a living working at a surf camp on the island of Ngor. He knows about 50 locale Senegalese surfers. Most of them come from his village of about 2000 people.

Bakhoum said his family was not happy when he began surfing. He says his mother pushed him to take up a safer sport like gulf and work as a caddy for foreign tourist at the nearby resort. But, as surfing grew more popular, and Bakhoum started making a living from it, the family accepted his decision.

Bakhoum and surf camp operator Philippe Apack are taking surfers by boat from the island to the shore. Today, they are going to a spot called Secrets.
